What is Plantar Fasciitis and how can Osteopathy help?

Plantar Fasciitis is an overuse injury to the thick band of tissue located along the sole of your foot.

Symptoms can include;

  • Heel pain with first steps in the morning

  • Tenderness along bottom of the foot

  • Restricted ankle dorsiflexion

  • Pain when walking barefoot on hard surfaces

  • A limp may be present

So, how can Osteopathy help?

  • Deep tissue massage into sole of the foot and the surrounding muscles can help alleviate built up tension in the plantar fascia

  • Joint mobilisation to the foot and ankle to ensure you are able to move well through each stage of gait

  • Strengthening and stretching exercises to help de-load the plantar fascia. This may include strengthening of the calf muscles (gastrocnemius and soleus) as well as stretching the Achilles tendon and plantar fascia

  • Educate you on where the pain is coming from, how to prevent it from coming back, how to keep active whilst healing, advice on footwear and other tips to speed up your recovery, for example - rolling foot on frozen water bottle or using a massage ball on the sole of your foot to relieve tension.
